Lake of the Woods — Mud Still Paying, Fall Knocking
Lake of the Woods tourism’s Aug. 31 open-water note reads like the last chapter of summer with a bookmark already in September. Fish still parked over the deep mud on Big Traverse. Spinners and crankbaits still the meal ticket. Water temps noted in the mid-60s and sliding — which is the lake’s polite way of saying the fall program is warming up while the water cools down. Brother, that’s the paradox that keeps us buying gas.
South shore / Big Traverse: pink and firetiger spinner blades; crankbait colors getting looks include blue/chrome, firetiger, shiny gold, and pink UV firetiger — rotate until the walleyes pick a favorite like they’re ordering off a diner menu. Expect the jig bite to elbow its way in as cooling continues. Rainy River: mixed bag now, with the emerald-shiner run and the walleye follow just getting started — the famous fall river show is on deck, not fully on stage yet. Sturgeon interest also ramps Sept–Oct per the same write-up. NW Angle: muskie activity typically picks up toward fall; walleye still strong; black crappies among the islands, plus pike and bass if you want a multi-species day that feels like a buffet with no line.
